ACS ACR1552U-M1 – Professional USB NFC Reader
ACS ACR1552U-M1 USB NFC Reader IV is an advanced contactless smart card reader based on 13.56 MHz technology. It is designed for applications requiring broad contactless card compatibility, high communication speed and additional security capabilities.
The reader is compliant with USB CCID and PC/SC, enabling interoperability with standard smart card applications without requiring a proprietary host interface. The device is powered directly through USB and provides plug-and-play operation.
High-speed NFC communication – up to 848 kbps
One of the key advantages of the ACR1552U-M1 is support for communication speeds of up to 848 kbps for ISO 14443 cards. It also supports communication with ISO 15693 cards at up to 26 kbps. The integrated antenna can provide a reading distance of up to approximately 70 mm, depending on the card or tag type.
Extensive smart card compatibility
The ACR1552U-M1 supports a particularly broad range of contactless technologies, including:
- ISO 14443 Type A and Type B,
- ISO 15693,
- ISO/IEC 18092 NFC,
- MIFARE®,
- FeliCa,
- NFC Tags,
- SRI/SRIX, CTS, Innovatron, Picopass and Topaz cards.
This makes the ACR1552U-M1 suitable for identification systems, access control, e-government, transportation, loyalty systems, NFC marketing and other projects using contactless smart card technology.
Three NFC operating modes
The ACR1552U-M1 provides three NFC operating modes, allowing the reader to be adapted to different application requirements:
- Reader/Writer Mode – reading and writing supported cards and NFC tags,
- Card Emulation Mode – emulation of an NFC card,
- Keyboard Emulation Mode – sending card or tag data to the computer as keyboard input.
Keyboard Emulation can be particularly useful where data read from a card or NFC tag needs to be entered directly into an active application field without developing a dedicated software integration.
Built-in SAM slot
The reader features one ISO 7816 Class A SAM slot for standard SIM-sized secure access modules. Depending on the implementation, a SAM can be used for additional security functions such as secure cryptographic material storage, key diversification and mutual authentication.
Extended APDU and firmware upgrade
The ACR1552U-M1 supports extended APDU up to 64 KB, making it suitable for applications requiring larger data structures to be exchanged with contactless cards. The reader also supports USB firmware upgrades, allowing the firmware to be updated without replacing the hardware.
Why choose ACR1552U-M1 over ACR1252U-M1?
The ACR1552U-M1 builds on the technology of the ACR1252U series while adding several important capabilities. The key differences are summarized below:
| Feature | ACR1552U-M1 | ACR1252U-M1 |
|---|---|---|
| Technology | 13.56 MHz NFC | 13.56 MHz NFC |
| ISO 14443 A/B | Yes | Yes |
| ISO 15693 | Yes | No |
| ISO 14443 speed | Up to 848 kbps | Up to 424 kbps |
| MIFARE® / FeliCa / NFC | Yes | Yes |
| SAM | 1 × ISO 7816 Class A | 1 × ISO 7816 Class A |
| NFC modes | Reader/Writer, Card Emulation, Keyboard Emulation | Reader/Writer, Card Emulation, Peer-to-Peer |
| Extended APDU | Up to 64 KB | Yes |
| Firmware upgrade | Yes | Yes |
| USB | USB Type-A, Full Speed | USB Type-A, Full Speed |
When an application requires ISO 15693 support, higher communication speed of up to 848 kbps for ISO 14443 or Keyboard Emulation, the ACR1552U-M1 provides a more extensive feature set than the ACR1252U-M1. The ACR1252U-M1 remains a suitable choice for applications focused on common ISO 14443/NFC cards where Peer-to-Peer communication is more important than Keyboard Emulation.
Typical applications
The ACR1552U-M1 can be used in:
- e-government and electronic identification systems,
- e-banking and e-payment applications,
- access control and authentication systems,
- transportation and ticketing systems,
- loyalty systems,
- network security and user authentication,
- NFC marketing, including smart posters and URL campaigns,
- smart card and NFC applications requiring a standard USB reader.
